LIME plays a part in Reading Month

LIME staff took time out from the office to read to students from three schools to celebrate Reading Month.

May was celebrated as Reading Month in Saint Lucia, and LIME certainly played its part in the celebrations. The island’s leading telecommunications service provider donated books and school supplies to three schools, and colleagues – including members of the company’s management team – took time out from the office to read to children at those schools.

Earlier in the month, spearheaded by the Staff Engagement Committee, LIME colleagues were encouraged to donate books for onward presentation to Plain View Combined, Fond St Jacques Primary and Grande Riviere Primary. Well over a hundred books were handed over, along with lunch kits, bags and stationery. Several employees visited all three schools to read favourites like Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, The Billy Goats Gruff and Alice In Wonderland to students from kindergarten through to Grade 3.

“This was a great experience for us,” said LIME Human Resource Partner, Danette Lambert. “Interacting with the students was rewarding and fun, and I think we were able to really prod that love of reading that we want our young people to have. As a company, this is part of our corporate social responsibility, but it’s also important to us as Saint Lucians that we play our part in the education of our younger citizens. Many of our colleagues are also parents, so we fully understand how crucial it is to get that encouragement and support.”

Principal of Fond St Jacques Primary, Mrs Mangroo, remarks that the activity was timely and valuable. “It’s always nice for the children to hear different voices, it really motivates them to keep reading and keep learning,” she explained. “It also shows the students that people care about their development beyond maybe just their teachers and their parents. I must applaud the staff at LIME for taking such a positive step, and I have to thank them as well for the donation. You can always count on LIME as a good corporate citizen.”
