On May 18 St Lucia was rocked by the murder of beauty queen contestant Alisha Hunte. The 22-year-old was stabbed multiple times and left for dead in her Trouya apartment. She was found around 5pm by her roommate. However, authorities estimate she died around midday. That very night a suspect appeared at the Gros Islet Police Station with his attorney.
News reached the STAR on Tuesday evening (May 24) that the 27-year-old of Careille had been charged for Hunte’s murder. A post mortem on Monday revealed Hunte died of hemorrhagic shock secondary to multiple stab wounds.
On Wednesday the man made his first court appearance at the Gros Islet court before Magistrate Velon John. During the proceedings he was read the charge and asked whether he understood it. He gave an affirmative reply and the case was adjourned to June 8 for case management. In the meantime, he has been remanded to custody.
It was an extremely emotional time for all parties involved. Members of the Hunte family as well as those of the man’s family attended the hearing. The gravity with which the situation has impacted both families was apparent when the defendant’s mother became so overwhelmed she collapsed.
