Mexicans in Saint Lucia Celebrate

Today, September 16 Mexico celebrates its 204th Independence Anniversary. Ahead of this day, Mexico’s Ambassador to Saint Lucia, Luis Manuel Lopez Moreno and his wife hosted a reception at their residence at Reduit on Monday September 15 to mark this milestone. In attendance was the Governor General of Saint Lucia and acting Prime Minister Phillip J Pierre, both of who offered congratulatory remarks to the government and people of Mexico.

MP and opposition member Stevenson King, Derek Walcott, Commerce Minister Emma Hippolyte, other government officials also attended Monday’s event, Mexicans residing in Saint Lucia and specially invited guests.

Just as his president would do back in Mexico, on Monday the ambassador reenacted the ringing of the bell and recitation of the Grito de Dolores (Mexico’s cry of independence). The local independence celebration also featured authentic Mexican singing and dancing, Mexican food and of course tequila, Sol Beer and Corona, among other treats.

Mexico has had diplomatic ties with Saint Lucia for many years now and has come to this country’s assistance in many areas. Earlier this year Mexico contributed US$500,000 to relief efforts, following the passage of the Christmas Eve trough last December. A water project for Dennery, which is funded by Mexico, is now on stream among other areas of cooperation and assistance signed between Mexico and Saint Lucia.
