Technical Knockouts (TKO’s) were the order of the day in this case night, when the Fifth Annual Creole Boxing Championships got underway Thursday evening at the Vigie Multi-Purpose Sports Complex. If you missed the opening don’t fret, the completion comes to a close Saturday evening.
Special guests in attendance included Minister for Youth Development and Sports, Shawn Edward; and Acting Permanent Secretary, Fortuna Belrose who greeted all the teams and made brief opening remarks.
Host country St Lucia enjoyed mixed fortunes last night on the opening night of action at the Vigie Multipurpose Sports Complex as the Fifth Annual Creole Boxing Championships begun here last evening.
St Lucian boxers were involved in four bouts last evening winning two and losing two. In winners row for St Lucia Thursday night were welterweight novice Nyran David who won over Cecil Hodge of Anguilla by a TKO- one minute and 43 seconds of the second round. Also victorious for St Lucia last night was welterweight senior Kyghan “The Hitman” Mortley who won over Yancy Megange (Martinique) on points.
St Lucia’s Alva “Horseman” Monplaisir lost to Jordan Ngwete (Cayenne) by TKO one minute and 41 seconds into round three of a light welterweight contest. The other St Lucian to suffer defeat was Joshua Duberrey who lost a bantamweight contest on points to Keshan Jacoby (Guadeloupe).
In other bouts Thursday evening, Jean Phillipe Errin (Guadeloupe) won over Kelvin Benjamin (Anguilla) by the TKO route, after the fight was stopped in the 3rd round. Guadeloupe’s Thomas Marc was victorious on points over Daniel Langelier of Martinique. Langelier is the younger brother of St Lucian middleweight the dreadlocked Arthur Langelier and it was his first time being back in St Lucia after 14 years, having been born in Vieux Fort.
The championship entered its second night of competition Friday with five St Lucians being featured on tonight’s card. The competition comes to a close Saturday evening.
