[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Saint Lucia National Female Rugby 7s team took part in the Mitsubishi Electric Rugby Barbados World 7s at Kensington Oval, Barbados, from December 8-9.
The first match on day one was against the Trinidad and Tobago Police. The T&T Police scored first. The Saint Lucia Females countered with a try from Electra Marcelle.
T&T Police then proceeded to score two more tries and one conversion in the second half of the game for a total of 17 points.
The Saint Lucia Females managed to close the match with a final try by Mary Roberts and a conversion by Kameka President for a total of 12 points.
Game two against Guadeloupe. Saint Lucia opened the match with a try each from Kameka President and Electra Marcelle, and one conversion by President.
Guadeloupe managed to get through and unattended space and scored one try in the first half.
Saint Lucia followed their second half with a try from Mary Roberts and Kera Dornelley and a conversion by President.
The final score was 24 to 5 in favour of the Saint Lucia Females.
Game one on day two did not start favourably for the Saint Lucia Females as Barbados scored the first try in the first minute. Kameka President was able to nullify the score with a try followed by a conversion for a total of seven points.
Barbados continued to dominate in the second half with three tries and one conversion. The final score was Barbados 22 and Saint Lucia 7.
Game two on day two saw a revitalize “take no prisoners” Saint Lucian team. Saint Lucia completely annihilated the Swansea Bevvies out of Wales with two tries from Electra Marcelle, a further two from Mary Roberts and another two by President. There were also four conversions, two each by President and Winnie Della Rene.
The final score in this match was Saint Lucia 38 to Swansea Bevvies 0.
Saint Lucia Females managed to secure third place in the Open Female Pool.
In other news, Chantel John, local rugby referee, continues to make her mark on the international rugby stage as she was the only Caribbean rugby referee to ever officiate at the Kensington Oval. She also officiated at the finals of the females where world famous Heather Fisher’s team Rugby Ecosse Feminin, came out victorious over Swansea Bevvies.
Saint Lucia National Rugby 7’s Team consisted of the following players: Marie Electra Marcelle (Captain), Kameka President (Vice Captain), Kera Dornelly, Jeanik Edgar, Jermiah Evariste, Mylene Grunberg, Della Rene, Rachel Robert, Nelta Samuel, Senetta Vigie, Tiffany Alfred, Marissa Wilfred and Loianna Alexander. Zhenya Alexander was the Physiotherapist and Roger Butcher served as Manager, Coach and Team Liason.
Butcher who is also the President of the SLRFU, stated that the Union’s participation in this tournament, is part of their preparation for the RAN 7’s Olympic Qualifier next year.
The SLRFU thanked all sponsors and volunteers who assisted in making the tour a reality.
