Officials urge Saint Lucians to be vigilant and report any sightings of Sharks

Saint Lucians are being urged to be vigilant and report any sightings of sharks to the Department of Fisheries. The warning comes on the heels of recent sightings in the region —earlier this month, one woman was injured following a shark attack in St. Kitts & Nevis.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Saint Lucia’s Department of Agriculture, Fisheries, Natural Resources and Co-operatives, said that it has been made aware of sightings of sharks and their interactions with humans within the Caribbean region.

The department noted that “such incidents have been concentrated in the northern Caribbean region; however, local seagoers are advised to take all precautionary measures when using the marine environment.”

“The department appeals to the general public to remain vigilant and report any observations or sighting of sharks, particularly within the nearshore, by contacting the Department of Fisheries at 468 4135, 4684143 or 725-1667,” the statement read.
