Poachers take turtle eggs from nest at Vigie Beach; Fisheries Department calls on public to be vigilant

The Department of Fisheries has sought to remind Saint Lucians that anyone caught interfering with nesting sea turtles and their nests, or are in possession of sea turtle meat or eggs, is liable to a maximum fine of EC$5000.00 per offence. In a press release issued today, the department indicated that on Monday July 13, at about 12:30 pm, officials responded to a report of a nesting turtle on Vigie Beach. The department noted that the turtle successfully completed its nesting activity and returned to the sea.

“However, on Tuesday July 14, the team visited the area and observed that the turtle nest was disturbed. Further investigation revealed that all the turtle eggs were taken from the nest by poachers,” the department stated. “The Department of Fisheries wishes to remind the public of the sea turtle nesting period from March 01 to November 30, 2020. Members of the public are further reminded that in accordance with the section 33 (1) (b) of the Fisheries Regulation, Cap 7.15 of the revised Laws of Saint Lucia, it is an offence to interfere with any nesting sea turtle or their eggs.”

In an effort to ensure the survival of the sea turtle population, the Fisheries Department is pleading with the public to adhere to the following guidelines:
-Stay away from nesting sea turtles;
– Avoid driving on sea turtle nesting beaches;
– Avoid using lights when a nesting sea turtles is observed;
– Avoid handling sea turtle hatchlings (baby sea turtles);
– Do not take, handle or touch sea turtle eggs;
– Keep all pets, large items, ropes, nets and garbage off the beach;
