Children enrolled in the Kidznet Summer Program at the Vigie Multi-Purpose Sports Complex under the direction of former national netballer Alice Lynch, got up close and I dare say personal following a recent visit from Prime Minister, Dr Kenny Anthony.
What should have been a cordial visit turned into an impromptu press conference, when youngsters ranging from age 4 to 14 fired away with a wide range of questions dealing with VAT, laptops for secondary school students, his duties as prime minister and so on.
Some participating students came well prepared. One 15-year-old male student of St Mary’s College posed a question to the Prime Minister based on the SLP’s Manifesto. Laptops for secondary school students was his primary concern.
One youngster whose parents may be feeling the effects of our stagnant economy asked the Prime Minister: “Is it really true you are going to take out VAT? He replied with an emphatic NO and went on to say “all over the world there is VAT and so we have to adjust and come like the rest of the world, otherwise we are going to get into trouble.”
Dr Anthony thoroughly enjoyed his visit and confessed he would like nothing better than go back in time to relive his youthful days. “I wish I could be just like them and enjoy life all over again,” he said. “These kids are fabulous they are wonderful. I feel something very special for each and every one of them, because really they are the future of this country.”
Kidznet is no ordinary summer camp. Lynch and her staff along with several prominent guest speakers provide participants with a well rounded education.
