PRIME MINISTER URGES CAUTION

Saint Lucia is currently being affected by a trough system which has caused poor visibility and flooding in various parts of the island. As a result, the Ministry of Education has issued an advisory for the early closure of schools. Reports reaching the Office of the Prime Minister also indicate that many establishments have closed for the day.

Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Kenny D. Anthony says he is monitoring the system and is very concerned about communities that are usually affected by such weather.

Flooding in Castries

According to the Prime Minister,

“The Saint Lucia Met Office has advised my office that currently flooding is occurring in many parts of the island and should continue into the afternoon. I am extremely concerned about some our low-lying communities. I anxiously await an assessment from the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) as they receive reports from the various communities. Meanwhile, I call on all residents to be vigilant to ensure that they act swiftly to protect themselves and family if necessary.”

The Prime Minister also expressed concern about the number of individuals who are currently on the streets, attempting to get home. He called for a heightened measure of caution and patience.

Dr. Anthony said,

“As I traversed the streets I noticed that many of our children are making their way home from school. Equally, there are many parents who are attempting to pick up their children from school or are simply trying to get home. I wish to urge patience and tolerance as persons try to get home. Where the roads are totally submerged, please be patient and wait. We need to ensure that we do not place our lives in any danger.”

The Prime Minister expressed gratitude to all members of the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force and the Saint Lucia Fire Service who are assisting motorists and responding to calls for help. He called on all citizens to monitor the updates from the Met Office and to heed all advisories.
