One thing for sure COVID-19 has played havoc with local sporting events, however, the St Lucia Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) continues to be active and vibrant while adhering to the various protocols.
The SLRFU started out with a Tag Rugby Tournament in August and since then have continued staging a series of tournaments, the latest being a Rugby 7’s Series that began on September 13. The third and final leg of the SLRFU Rugby 7’s series, was hosted by Whiptail Warriors Rugby Club at the Corinth Playing Field on Sunday October 11.
Three male teams took part, Rogues, Renegades and Whiptail Warriors, while two female teams Renegades and Whiptail Warriors also competed. The two female teams played three matches for a best of three. Whiptail Warriors won convincingly with a three match victory by scores of 14-10, 19-15 and 17-10.
A Round Robin tournament was used for the male tournament with a total of three games played. The results are as follows: Rogues 26 Whiptail/Sharks 17, Renegades 21 Whiptail 7, Rogues 45 Renegades 17.
The final standings: 1st Place: Rogues, 2nd Place: Renegades, 3rd Place: Whiptail Warriors. Following play on Sunday, Technical Director of the SLRFU, Wayne Pantor, gave an update of things to come: “Going forward we will be going into the 10’s format of the game. We will be breaking up into three main teams which should be Renegades, Whiptails and Rogues. They will be playing two series of 10 aside version of the game. The females will also break into two teams to compete in that version of the game. After that we will have two 15 aside games in November with one in north and the other in the south.”
I inquired about the Reela Rugby Club who have been absent at recent competitions. Pantor explained that several of their players are students and due to the new COVID-19 regulations, it’s challenging getting players to come out and play on weekends.
Sunday October 25 will be the first leg of the rugby 10’s series to be hosted by Rogues Rugby Club on the La Clery Playing Field. The next series consists of two tournaments hosted by Rogues and Renegades respectively.
