Rider of motorcycle in serious condition

The scene after last Friday's motorcycle accident.

Traffic to and from Castries came to an abrupt halt on Friday, January 15 near the American Drywall Building in Vide Boutielle as two young men became the island’s latest accident victims. At about 4pm, just about the time when the roadways are busiest, with most people leaving their offices heading home from work a motorcycle ridden by 29-year-old Keevan Lake Wallace from Morne Du Don collided with a car.

Both vehicles were heading north at the time of the accident, and eyewitnesses say the driver of the white and yellow Suzuki motorcycle had been attempting to overtake the other vehicle (a white Honda). Regular Friday afternoon traffic became a nightmarish situation as both young men flew off the motorcycle and onto the road both sustaining serious injuries.

One eyewitness recalls seeing both men in tears of anguish laying on the road, particularly the passenger 20-year-old Owen Joseph from Vieux Fort with the lower part of his leg visible broken, so much so that it appeared to have been almost completely severed from his body. For the victims themselves, it may have seemed like hours went by before emergency personnel arrived on the scene particularly with median traffic drama, but people on the scene say the ambulance arrived within minutes.

“A lot of people got out of their cars, some people wanted to help,” said an onlooker. “I pulled over as well. There was so much blood what can you really do? There was not much they could have done before the ambulance came. SSU officers were on the scene to direct traffic so that helped a lot.”

Police say no one from the other vehicle driven by a man from Millet, Anse La Raye was injured. According to police information Keevan Lake has already been discharged from hospital while the pillionrider remains admitted.
