A confident Rogues 2 Rugby Club dominated the St Lucia Rugby Football Union’s (SLRFU) Tag Rugby 5’s Tournament organized by their various teams. Playing at Monchy Playing Field on Sunday, Rogues 2 achieved a three peat having won the two previous competitions.
No doubt about it, Rogues 2 were geared up and on a mission to emerge victorious at Sunday’s tournament. During a time out, I asked Rogues 2 Captain Jerry Charles about his team’s chances of making it three in a row. There was no holding back. Beaming with confidence, he told me: “We are trying to accomplish that feat and most definitely we can do so.” He was true to his word. So said, so done!
This was the third and ?nal leg of the SLRFU touch rugby 5’s organized by Whiptail Warriors, in conjunction with the VBCC Stingers.
Commenting on the competition, Kurt Phillip of Whiptail Warriors said: “This is one of the tournaments that the SLRFU asked each club to host. Starting from the backlash of COVID-19 the team has done fairly well coming out from the rust and everything else.”
Seven teams participated: Rogues 1, Rogues 2 and Rogues Female teams, Whiptail Warriors (Male), Whiptail Warriors (Female), Boys Training Centre (BTC) and VBCC Stingers.
Following six preliminary matches, six teams played off for a chance to be in the quarter ?nals. Rogues 1 defeated Rogues Females 10-3; Whiptail Warriors defeated Stingers 8-3; BTC doubled the score on Whiptail Females 6-3.
These playoffs resulted in the quarter?nals with Rogues 2 Rugby Club getting past Whiptail Warriors 5-4, and BTC registering a convincing 8-2 win over Rogues Females. Whiptail Warriors were unable to play for third place, and so that left Stingers to step up and play against a mixture of the two females, with a ?nal win by Stingers 6-5.
The exciting ?nale was between Rogues 2 Rugby Club and underdogs BTC. In the end Rogues 2 managed to maintain their pace and won the match and final 10-7.
Final Results: First place Rogues 2 Rugby Club, second place BTC, third place Stingers. Top scorers of the tournament were Jeanmiel Phillip from Rogues 2, with total of 12 tries, followed by Denzel Stanley from the Boys Training Centre with nine tries in total.
Rogues 2 Rugby Club were successful in their quest for a three peat, however, it remains to be seen if their luck and talent carries on, when the SLRFU returns to tackling with the ?rst leg of the 7’s series tournament. It will be hosted by the Rogues Rugby Club on September 6, from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm at La Clery Playing Field.
