The Saint Lucia Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) held its first public event since the COVID-19 lockdown. This event was hot off the heels of the election of a new executive. Roger Butcher was re-elected President. The Vice-President is Mario Chicot; Secretary, Kisha Edgar, Treasurer, Geema Inglis-Alfred; and Public Relations Officer, Saeed James.
Eight teams registered for the first ever Carnival 3s Beach Rugby Tournament. Rouges Rugby Club registered three teams. The other teams were Whiptail Warriors, Rollers, Young Stars, Loose Ones (a young under 19 team from the Boys Training Centre at their first competition) and Green Lanterns.
The games got underway with Rouges One taking a 7-2 lead over Rollers, and Rouges Two a 2-0 lead over Whiptail Warriors. Rouges Three another young team followed their fellow club members with a 3-0 lead over Green Lanterns. Other games in the first round were: Rollers 6-0 Young Stars; Loose Ones 5-0 Whiptail Warriors; Green Lanterns (Bye); Young Stars 3-2 Rouges Two; Rouges Three 3-2 Loose Ones; Rouges Three (Bye).
As each team won one game, each team advanced into the quarterfinals determined by the number of tries scored in each match. Quarter final results: Rouges One 5-2 Loose Ones; Rouges Three 1-0 Rollers; Rouges Two 6-2 Green Lanterns; 2-2 tie between Young Stars and Whiptail Warriors. The tie was broken with a coin toss with Young Stars prevailing.
Semi-final results: Rouges One 4-2 Rouges Three; Rouges Two 6-4 Young Stars. Rouges One and Two went head to head in the finals, with Rouges One eventually becoming victorious with an eventual 2-1 win over Rouges 2.
Center stage for these matches were referees, Chantel John, Garner Ted Felicien and Wayne Pantor. Physiotherapist Zhenya C Allain was also present, but thankfully was never needed for this first time event for 2020. The SLRFU thank all participants and supporters and hopes to see everyone again for future events.
