It was the Mervin Wells and Tarryck Gabriel show, as both batsmen totaled 151 runs for Caribbean Stars against Labayee, in the finals of the Division One Eagle Freights and Brokerage APL T20 Tournament played September 23 under the lights on the Balata Playing Field.
It was literally standing room only to watch this final, given the fact that there are no seats at the venue. Didn’t matter! The large crowd thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Caribbean Stars batted first and after a cautious start, opening batsmen Wells and Gabriel settled down and took over with sixes and fours along with a smattering of singles. When all was said and done, Wells had a brilliant 81with Gabriel also making his presence felt with 70. Their next highest scorer was Sabinus Emmanuel with 21.
Having completed their allotted 20 overs Caribbean Stars were 198 for five, had it not been for some outstanding fielding by Labayee they would easily have scored a double century. The wicket takes for Labayee were Avitus James with three and one each to Daniel Jn Baptiste and Nickson Edmund.
Labayee came out to bat with their supporters anticipating an aggressive inning from Collinus Callendar. They were not disappointed as he belted the ball all around for an impressive 81. However, he received little support from the rest of the batsmen as only Orey Changoo 19, Daniel Jn Baptiste 13 and Avitus James 11 showed any resistance.
Labayee were eventually all out for 136 in 17.4 overs. Bowling for Caribbean Stars Gabriel dismissed four for 15 with two wickets each going to Ernell Sexius, Wells and Horace Frazer.
Final Score: Caribbean Stars winning by 62 runs and claiming the Eagle Freight APL T20 2020 championship.
