St Lucia’s world-class high jumper Levern Donaline Spencer, ended her first European tour for 2013, with another medal winning performance last Friday.
Competing in Beuhl, Germany, the prolific high jumper soared over the bar at 1.90 m to win earn the silver medal. The gold medal went to former World Champion and Croatia’s number one Blanka Vlasic with a clearance of 2 m. Germany’s Arianne Friedrich took the bronze.
Spencer, the region’s premiere female high jumper and CAC Championship record holder started her competition with a first time clearance at 1.84 m, before skipping the next mark of 1.87 m and moving on to 1.90 m. That too she cleared on her first attempt before again skipping the next mark of 1.92 m, which is the 2013 World Championship B standard qualifying mark, a height she has already achieved twice this year.
Spencer who celebrated her 29th birthday on Saturday had three very good but unsuccessful attempts at the next mark of 1.95 m.
This was a successful European tour for Spencer who is a two time Olympian and St Lucia’s multi Sportswoman of the Year. She medaled at all four of her competitions winning one gold, one silver and two bronze medals.
Spencer has since then returned to her base in the United States in preparation for her next competition, which is expected to be representing St Lucia at the CAC Games.
