‘I actually read somewhere that more Americans are murdered on home ground each year than died in Iraq.’ I think that you mean that more US troops killed themselves than died in Iraq, in the last year of the campaign. Umpteen more are murdered (15,000 in 2012) but then there are 300 million, so nowhere near the per capita rate of St Lucia.

Well for once I have to agree with the Laborie Beridian for year I have often wonder whats up the road safety down there. Just completing my grand tour and doing my one good charitable deed for the year so far I almost became another victim. Diversion !! That’s all she wrote as you approach the Canels Crater, no lighting, no officer on duty only rubber cones. I am begining to wonder if I should have handed out paint and bruches instead of pencil and pens. It’s dangerous to drive down there. Dont even talk about the wide road in Vieux-Fort there are no signs.

The big question is, just who is going to get fired over this careless lack of signage or road cones? Someone has to answer for this, I can tell you that I would sue the Government of St. Lucia and whole bunch of other involved people for this. The arrogance of ignorance carries a stench of uncivilized zombies.

I saw an SLP government minister on television responding to this death. The callous, arrogant almost evil reply as though he was making an offhand remark about a dog killed on the road.
No wonder our youth themselves are so callously and mindlessly killing each other. There is a streak of primitive grotesque gutter evil that now runs through our consciousness that we cannot even sleep safely in our homes. We see it every day in our politicians.

Oh I forgot. The local press do not ask any questions about that instead focus in the arbitration and not why we needed arbitration in the first place.

This is a masterful piece of writing. I just vacationed on SL a few weeks ago and I must admit that the road signs are horrific. How could a country be focused on tourism and not cater for tourists? Another concern is the lack of law enforcement personnel. …where are the officers on patrol? Where are the traffic cops? SL this is not the way. A lady at the hotel I stayed at gave an account of a thug on bike ripping a chain off her neck and it was only the heroism of two other motorists who chased the guy down and recovered the chain.
I spent 3 weeks in SL and I never saw a police officer in Castries – not one. It is safe to say that this was my one and only visit to SL.

This is symbolic of the haphazard mentality in doing business in St. Lucia. There is sometimes an ignorance when it comes to safety. This death could have been prevented, a simple sign as well there needed to be very early warnings about the turn off, at least three in progression towards the section. It made sense that this accident happened, it was like running into a parked car in the middle of the highway.

It is truly sad to see what’s happening in St. Lucia especially in my neighbourhood of Bois D’ Orange but I thinks people blame others including government too much. If someone knows what the road condition is and does not drive accordingly, he or she is to blame and accept the consequences for doing so. I leave in Toronto and read most of your posts via the star app on Blackberry and find that you as a reporter help people to become more complacent and blame others for their mistakes.
Regardless of your environment, you only have control of your actions and not that of others. You always use the Bible to reason on matters or to blame Christians. I request that you read Proverbs 22:3

Great piece Rick. when will our politicians ever do the business of the people. Year in year out we get lip service from our ParLIARmentarians.Unfortunately another one had to loose his life because of another incompetent Civil servant. Hey after all this is St. Lucia “where we are happy” and no one is ever hold accountable for neglence and incompetence. In some other part of the world, some heads would have rolled. Just check the news. New Jersey Governor had to move in quickly to do damage control, but in st. Lucia its business as usual.

This only continues since ordinary people are not concerned about their safety. If it were in another country we can be sure that there would be lawsuits of wrongful death and Negligence on the part of the authorities or some other form of penalty. But it doesn’t matter St. Lucians behave like rats anyway.
