SLTCC schooled by visiting futsal team

St Lucia’s Teachers’ Credit Co-operative (SLTCC) who won this year’s Corporate Warfare futsal title, received some serious lessons when it comes to playing the game, after hosting a team from Guadeloupe where the sport is highly competitive and played on a regular basis. The Guadeloupe contingent consisting of men and women, were on a futsal cruise throughout the Caribbean. On Thursday they made St Lucia their port of call and engaged the local team in a somewhat friendly encounter on Thursday at the Kenneth “Wriggler’ King Multi-Purpose Sports Complex.

The visitors certainly made themselves at home. Team members sat on the grass a safe near the sidelines cheering the players on, using a megaphone, conch shell, drum and anything else you could think of. Lionel John of Timeout Entertainment pointed out that this game which has been planning stage since November and the idea is to have Guadeloupe come here and play the championship team of Corporate Warfare 2018. Coming out that is to see some lovely futsal so the SLTCC and St Lucians by extension can see how the guys from Guadeloupe who are a little bit more organized than us approach the game, how they play it and improve the game in St Lucia. Our mandate is to essentially grow the game of futsal in St Lucia and we are using any form of assistance to do so.”

Commenting on the game John said: “I am happy with the proceedings, I know the time was a bit of a challenge for most St Lucians 10:00 am on a Thursday, however I am absolutely elated and I can see some students from Ava Maria and the RC Boys and Methodist School watching some of the action.” When asked how the St Lucia team performing, he replied, “so far it looks like we are being outclassed, the rain stopped the proceedings so let us see how the rest of it will go.”

Team Guadeloupe included St Lucia in their tour of the Caribbean.

Best way to describe the game is fast furious and somewhat challenging, as the surface became slippery following a light shower. Nevertheless, both teams showcased their skill, but in the end it was Guadeloupe coming out on top in a decisive manner. For the SLTCC this was a definitely a learning experience which will serve them well in their quest to defend their Corporate Warfare futsal title.
