Competition wise, St Lucia’s world class high jumper and 2012 Olympic qualifier Levern Spencer, has been having a relatively quiet year as she continues her preparation for the London Olympics.
Spencer, from January of this year has been based at the World High jump Centre in Cologne, Germany where she is being coached by German coach Ritzdorf Wolfgang.
This move was financed and facilitated by the National Olympic Committee in collaboration with the St Lucia Athletics Association, in an effort to enhance Spencer’s performance at this year’s Olympics.
Despite the fact that her focus has been more on training rather than competition, Spencer has done a few competitive meets, trying to execute what she has been learning from coach Wolfgang. She has won two gold medals against worthy opponents earlier this month with clearances of 1.88 metres (m) in Sinn, Germany and 1.91 m in Regesbourg, Germany with the mark of 1.91 m being the seventh best clearance in the world so far this year. It’s placed her among the top 20 on the IAAF listing at present.
Last week, she came up against a strong field at the Moscow Challenge in Russia and placed fifth with a clearance of 1.86 m. The event was won by Russian number two Svetlana Shkolina who is also at number two on this year’s world listing, with the defending Beijing Olympic Champion Tia Hellabaut of Belgium placing second.
St Lucia’s world class high jumper is presently back in Germany, on a two and a half week break from competition as she continues her special training in preparation for the London Olympics.
