St. Lucia-Guyana Business Man Awarded Honorary Doctorate

Founder and Charmain of Baron Foods Ltd & Baron Group of Companies Inc has been awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Guyana in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the Food-Agro industry, commitment to excellence, and lasting impact in the Caribbean and beyond.


Dr. Ramjattan being awarded his Honorary Degree by the Chancellor & Vice Chancellor of the University of Guyana, (Professor Edward Green & Professor Paloma Mohmmed Martin) on November 7th, 2024.

The University of Guyana, known for its dedication to academic and professional excellence, selected Dr. Ramjattan for this honorary degree as part of its efforts to recognize individuals who exemplify leadership, innovation, and dedication to advancing industry standards and enhancing communities. Dr Ramjattan’s journey has been marked by noteworthy achievements in the fields of food processing and business in local, regional and international trade.

Beginning his career at Bookers Sugar Estate in Guyana, Dr. Ramjattan gained foundational industry insights that shaped his trajectory. His work with Rick’s & Sari Agro Industries led him from Guyana to St. Lucia, where he eventually founded Baron Foods Ltd., a company celebrated for its commitment to quality, innovation, and the vibrant flavors of the Caribbean.

Under his leadership, the team at Baron Foods Ltd. have achieved remarkable milestones, including FSSC 22000 certification, global product recognition with awards such as the ITQI Superior Taste Award and Monde Selection, and successful exportation to over 20 countries, including the United States, Canada, Europe and UAE. The company’s influence spans across English- and French-speaking Caribbean territories, with a focus on raising the region’s profile in the global marketplace.

Throughout his career, Dr. Ramjattan has been recognized with several prestigious honors that celebrate his leadership, impact, and dedication to excellence. In 2014, he was awarded the “Order of the British Empire (OBE)” by Her Majesty Queen Elizibeth II at Buckingham Palace – for his contributions to the development of the food industry and his philanthropic efforts, St. Lucia Chamber of Commerce, “Business person of the Year Award” – 2 years consecutively, the Caribbean Business Award, “Entrepreneur of the Year Award- 2012” and the coveted Ernst & Young, “Entrepreneur of the Year Award- 1999” to name a few, cementing his status as a global leader in business and industry.

The University of Guyana’s selection process for honorary doctorates spans over a year and involves a rigorous five-step approval process, including extensive background research on the nominee. The University notes that recipients of this distinguished honor must exemplify decades of consistent excellence in their field and demonstrate a strong commitment to philanthropy.
