Students sensitized to crime scene protocols

The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) is on a campaign to sensitize the public about crime scene protocols and what better place to start than with the children among us. On Wednesday the RSLPF took its crime scene sensitization programme to a summer camp at the RC Boys School.

Corporal Shervon Matthew and Constable Martis Serieux of the Major Crimes Unit spearheaded the initiative engaging the youngsters in a discussion about the problems that are created when members of the public encroach on crime scenes.

Over the last few weeks the police have been addressing the matter via the media expressing concern over the fact that sometimes members of the public converge on crime scenes. “Not only is there the likelihood that evidence can be contaminated or removed after being trodden underfoot, as in the case of blood or hair samples, but persons run the risk of being infected by body fluids,” police say.

The police officers who visited the RC Boys School summer camp said they were impressed by the knowledge of the youngsters and the types of questions they posed.

The sensitization drive, in addition to lectures, media interviews and discussions, will also include the launch of a bookmark imprinted with ten tips for members of the public to avoid contaminating crime scenes.
