The King a winner at Boxing Championships

The victorious St Lucia team and officials after winning the Creole Boxing Championship.

While one King lost his leadership bid in the political arena Sunday in Marigot, a boxer commonly referred to as “King Arthur” had no problem eliminating his opponent at the three day Creole Boxing Championship which concluded Saturday evening at the Vigie Muti-Purpose Sports Complex.

The dreadlocked Arthur Langellier who disposed of his opponent by way of a TKO, was one of four gold medalists at this championship, as the host country finished first overall with 22 points-four gold, four silver and two bronze medals.

St Lucia’s other three gold medals were presented to Kyghan “The Hitman” Mortley (69 kg welterweight class), Nyran David (69 kg welterweight) and British based boxer Ryan Charles (91 kg heavyweight).

Mortley showed why he is St Lucia’s boxer of the year. “The Hitman” who won a tough encounter against a boxer from Guadeloupe, was named Boxer of the Tournament.

The silver medalists were Trevon Lynch (bantam weight novice), Heslie Louis Joseph (light heavyweight novice), Adrian Louis (lightweight junior) and Yantil Roberts (light heavyweight novice) who made his debut in the ring.

Bronze medals were awarded to Joshua Duberry (bantamweight junior) and Alvin Monplasir (welterweight novice).

Guadeloupe placed second in the competition with two gold medals and four silver for 14 points.

It is often said winning a title is easier than retaining it. Last year’s champion French Guyana found that out the hard way, finishing third this year with three gold medals and one silver.

After winning the recent OECS Boxing Championships Head Coach Conrad Fredericks should once again be congratulated for the team winning the Creole Boxing Championships. This time around he was assisted by Cuban Coach Jorge Gonzalez Dominguez.  Second Vice President of the St Lucia Amateur Boxing Association/Pro Brian Mc Donald, managed the team.
