There was little more than scrap metal left behind at a crash site on the night of Thursday, February 17 along the Millennium Highway. When the STAR arrived on the scene a young man, Ed John Clement from Marisule was trapped inside his vehicle, a Daihatsu Terios, and the Jaws of Life had to be fetched to pry the wreckage apart so emergency personnel could get to him. According to eyewitnesses it was about 20 excruciating minutes before he was finally released from the grip of what was left of his vehicle.
The other driver of a Honda Step Wagon, Crispin Polius from Morne Du Don also sustained serious injuries as a result of the accident and could be heard telling onlookers the young man had been speeding and had lost control of his vehicle.
After the driver of the Terios was fitted with a neck brace, fire service personnel and on lookers helped set the overturned vehicle back onto its wheels. As the scenario unfolded a middle-aged woman, who was later identified as the young man’s mother arrived on the scene. Wailing, screaming and telling everyone who was there through tears, “you don’t understand,” police and other persons on the scene tried their best to calm her down to no avail.
In the moments before Clement was pulled from the wreckage two women were spotted supporting his head with their hands since his body was in such a precarious position within the overturned vehicle. At least one of the women was heard asking him to pray as they waited for the ambulance to arrive. The man, the sole occupant of the vehicle remained conscious throughout the ordeal.
When Clement was finally pried out of the vehicle by firefighter who were the first of the emergency response personnel to arrive on the scene, he was quickly transferred into a waiting ambulance. The young man is said to be nursing a broken collarbone among other injuries. His mother hopped in and accompanied him to the hospital.
The accident occurred just after 9pm Thursday night and both men are said to be in serious, but stable condition.
