WASCO Says SAVE WATER!

The Water and Sewerage Company Inc. (WASCO) takes the opportunity to remind the public that the 2021 Atlantic Hurricane Season is still on and that the peak of the cyclone season runs from mid August to late October.

Met officials have predicted an above normal season and rain events in August have already significantly impacted our intakes and catchment areas so far. Such adverse weather conditions are likely to affect WASCO’s water harvesting, treatment and distribution process due to increased levels of siltation and debris from river swells.

Additionally, landslides caused by heavy rains can damage underground mains on our distribution network, while downed trees and power lines can also impede service delivery to thousands of households and businesses across the island.

WASCO urges the public to make the necessary arrangements for adequate water storage in case of an eventuality by taking the following steps.

1. Store at least three days’ supply of water with 1 gallon of water per day for each person and each pet.
2. Pay attention to the expiration date for store-bought water. Water expires when the materials from the containers it is stored in breaks down and leaches into the water
3. Replace stored water every six months.
4. When storing water safely for drinking, it is best to use food-grade containers, which do not transfer toxic substances into the water they are holding.
5. Ensure that the storage container has a top that can be closed tightly and is made of durable, unbreakable materials.
6. If possible, use a container with a narrow neck or opening so water can be poured out rather than scooped out.
7. DO NOT USE containers that previously have been used to hold liquid or solid toxic chemicals including bleach or pesticides.

Additionally, harvesting rainwater is also an easy and safe method of water collection and storage for non-potable use during a rain event. An added benefit of storage and conservation is the economic advantage for consumers, who will realize savings on their consumption bills.
