What do explosive eruptions in SVG mean for Saint Lucia’s Sulphur Springs?

There is currently no heightened seismic activity at the Sulphur Springs in Soufriere, Saint Lucia. Director of the National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO), Dorine Gustave, made the disclosure during a press conference on Friday afternoon. Her comments come on the heels of St. Vincent and the Grenadines experiencing two explosive eruptions at the La Soufriere volcano. In the coming days, Saint Lucia is expected to welcome three hundred evacuees from the neighboring country.

The NEMO Director noted that the UWI Seismic Research Centre is actively monitoring Saint Lucia’s volcano. “We have been talking to the UWI Seismic Research Centre on a regular basis regarding our volcano here in Saint Lucia, and if it is at all acting up as is Mount Pelée in Martinique. We have received information that there is no heightened activity at the volcano in Soufriere.”

She added: “There are GPS monitoring stations that have been installed there by the Seismic Research Centre and they are monitoring from their end. So if there is any activity we will be informed via the UWI Seismic Research Centre.”

Meanwhile, Saint Lucia’s Ministry of Health has outlined a number of precautionary measures to be taken in light of the explosive eruptions: https://stluciastar.com/saint-lucias-moh-outlines-precautionary-measures-to-be-taken-in-light-of-explosive-eruptions-in-svg/
