On Friday November 6, 2009, the St Lucian Marine Police encountered a vessel about one nautical mile from Moule-a-Chique, about 50 feet from Maria Island. The vessel was dead in the water. The police switched on their search light and four men jumped from the vessel into the open water. According to police two men were also spotted on Maria Island (major).
The men in the water were brought aboard the police vessel and taken into custody. The police then towed the vessel to the Marine Unit. Some six hours later, police returned to the same area, took the remaining two men into custody and also recovered a quantity of cocaine from a reef near the island. The cocaine is valued at $450,000.
The men were each charged with Possession of Controlled Drugs, Possession with Intent to Supply and Importation of Drugs. They were remanded to custody until the completion of the trial. The trial began on Monday May 23 and concluded on Thursday May 26 when the jury returned a Not Guilty verdict on all 18 charges.
