West coast showdown for football title

Action from the semi-final encounter between Dennery and Canaries at the Beausejour Cricket Ground.

Due to proximity they are close neighbours, but come Sunday there will be no loving thy neighbour when Canaries and Anse La Raye square off in the finals of the 2011 Blackheart Knockout Football Tournament at the Beausejour Cricket Ground (BCG).
Canaries booked their place in the finals last Saturday with a 4-1 penalty kick semi-final win over former champions Dennery, after the score remained tied 2-2 at the end of regulation and extra time.
Anse la Raye had an easier time of it. They came away with a 4-1 win over Mon Repos who did well advancing as far as they did.
`So there you have it, Anse La Raye and Canaries in what has been dubbed a “West Coast Derby.” Who comes out on top? Each team will be looking for their first ever Blackheart trophy. That’s not the only thing at stake. The winning team takes home a cool $15,000.
Emotions are running high in this championship game. The late Phillip Tisson who died tragically while playing football in the United States and is originally from Canaries, played for his home side and also Anse La Raye. No doubt about it, whoever comes out on top will dedicate the victory to their fallen comrade.
The final is set for 7pm on Sunday June 12, with the two losing semi-finalists squaring off in the third place playofff at 5pm.
Before these two games, there is action at the BCG beginning at 1 pm with Caricom Masters going up against Dennery All Blacks Veterans in a friendly.
The game will be followed by a clash of the sponsors with a team from LIME going up against Windward and Leeward Brewery.
It’s not just football on this day. A lively entertainment has been put together featuring former Road March King and Party Monarch Ricky T along with the Derek Yarde Project.
