As Saint Lucia commemorates yet another Independence Anniversary, Digicel is also celebrating with the government and people. On Monday February 22nd, 2016 Saint Lucia will mark the observation of thirty-seven years as an independent nation under the theme ‘The Journey Continues…’ A series of national and community events, of which Digicel is proud sponsor, will be held across the island to mark the celebration.

Digicel has fostered some new partnerships for this year’s Independence celebrations and continues to support staple events and activities. One such new partnership is with the St. Lucia Moto X Club. The national sporting club, which was established in 1991, annually puts on the Independence Road Ride which scores of local and regional riders and cycling lovers anticipate. However, in 2016 the club has gone one step further with an extraordinary Independence calendar of activities and showcase of talent: on Friday February 19th at Pigeon Island, at Waterfront Castries on 21st and at Vieux Fort on 22nd.

Saint Lucians at home and abroad will be celebrating this weekend as the island observes 37 years of Independence from Great Britain.

The first ever International Banana and Food Festival, presented by the Southern Tourism Development Corporation and which will be held at the Philip Marcellin Grounds in Vieux Fort, is also receiving much support from Digicel in its unique presentation and feature on one of St. Lucia’s premier agricultural crops: the banana. In the community of Soufriere, Che Campeche Inc. will present its latest production of ‘Mal Coupan” at the Soufriere Mini Stadium, continuing in its quest to promote Saint Lucia’s Creole heritage in observance of this year’s Independence. Digicel has once again partnered with the community of Mon Repos in hosting their annual road relay; with the Gros Islet community with their Independence fashion show and sporting activities, and with the Ministry of Agriculture’s Seafood Fiesta on the Waterfront in Castries on Sunday February 21st.

The Bayfest team presents the second edition of the street festival in the heart of Rodney Bay, with a fusion of culinary and independence flavour, and Digicel continues to provide support as a key partner. Bayfest will feature an explosion of culinary arts with live demonstrations from some of Saint Lucia’s finest chefs both seasoned and junior. As the field of culinary sciences increasingly becomes a career choice for many young Saint Lucians, hospitality and tourism students from various programmes will have an opportunity to display and develop their skills and test their knowledge. Bayfest will take place on Saturday February 20th from 2pm.

Marketing and Communications Executive at Digicel, Miss Louise Victor, commented on Digicel’s involvement and support for Saint Lucia’s 37th Independence Anniversary: “Digicel’s continued involvement in the community, and also nationally, for yet another Independence celebration is one which gives us great joy. We believe in celebrating the achievements of the country and its people in every way hence our extensive support to various activities taking place across the island. We recognize that not every citizen will be able to be a part of the national activities in the northern part of the island therefore it is important that fringe activities receive just as much support so as to produce extraordinary Independence experiences for all.” Digicel wishes all Saint Lucians a safe, enjoyable and happy 37th Independence Anniversary!
