Allen Wins Again!

Delegates of the United Workers Party re-elected Allen Chastanet as head of the political party at its 39th annual convention on Sunday November 15, 2015. Chastanet, who was elected to head the party first in 2013 and again in 2014, received 280 votes. His rival for the post of UWP political leader, Sarah Flood Beaubrun received 55 votes.

The annual convention took place at the Gros Islet Secondary School under the theme “Unity, Work, Progress.” Sir James Mitchell, former prime minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, was the guest speaker at the event.

Dr. Gale Rigobert, the current opposition leader, was re-elected deputy political leader Sunday and Guy Mayers elected Chairman of the party.

In her concession speech Beaubrun told members and delegates; “I will work with the leadership of the party to ensure that we have a resounding victory at the next general elections.” “I am part of this family and here to stay,” she went on to say.

For his part, Chastanet first thanked “the Lord above for giving me the breath to be here.” He then thanked his wife, children, parents and family, including his UWP family whom he said teaches him so much every day. The UWP political leader also thanked party stalwarts and the executive before declaring that his arm was outstretched and his hand open to welcome all on board to unite the party. “If it is not for a team we cannot win. We have a solid team and you are all members of that team and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. But that team must become stronger,” Allen Chastanet declared Sunday.
