She was such a beautiful girl with an extraordinary soul.”
That’s how friends and family described Saint Lucia’s 24th homicide victim for the year, 19-year-old Chereece Benoit.
The young’s woman’s death has left those who knew her altogether off balance. From late Thursday night condolences were pouring in. Several people remembered her as always encouraging, eager to help others with their own life situations, always striving to be the best she could be.
By reliable accounts the teen was home alone on Thursday evening. Her mother returned at about 8:45 p.m. to discover Chereece her lying face down on her bed, her limbs bound. Police were called to the residence in La Feuille, Monchy, and an investigation was launched.
Chereece joins a growing list of young women killed in the prime of their time over the last two years, including 22-year-old Alisha Hunte; Krystal Felix, 23; and Crystal St Omer,17.
Hunte was stabbed multiple times. Her body was discovered in her Trouya apartment. A Monchy resident, Crystal’s body was found in bushes near Cap Estate. Krystal Felix was fatally struck by a stray bullet at a parking lot not far from Point Seraphine.
A resident from Chereece’s neighborhood told this reporter: “When I was growing up, things like that would upset everyone. People would be screaming and crying. But times have changed. People shrug and say life must go on. The main concern now is who’s next.”
