Having won the two previous Tag Rugby Tournaments, Rogues Rugby Club will be going all out for a three peat later this month. They made it two in a row on Sunday at the Sab Playing Facility, after coming out on top in the Renegades Tag Rugby Tournament by defeating Reela Rugby 5-4 in the final.
Eight teams participated, with Rouges Rugby putting forward three teams once again, two male and one female. Other teams competing were Reela Rugby, Whiptail Warriors (Male), Whiptail Rollers (Female), Blue Devils (comprising some of Saint Lucia Athletes/ Netballers) and Season Veterans.
After eight preliminary matches there were quarter finals, semi-finals and then the finals. Rogues 2 defeated Reela 4-3 in the final for their second consecutive tournament victory. Third place went to Blue Devils who beat Whiptail Warriors 5-4.
The Man of The Finals was Leroy “Hands” Lascaris of Rouges 2. President of the SLRFU, Roger Butcher praised the various teams for staging a number of no contact forms of rugby in this case tag rugby on account of Covid-19.
He said: “Due to the pandemic we do not have a vast cadre of sponsors again, so the executive of the SLRFU asked each club in the union to host a tournament and it is their way of raising funds for their club. Right now we are having the tournaments up north in Castries, but soon will be having a rugby caravan where we will be going around the island. We will be targeting Canaries, Choiseul, Micoud and some other communities. The idea is of course to spread the game and get as many members as possible.”
Butcher gave a great deal of credit to Technical Director, Wayne Pantor from Trinidad and Tobago who’s been here for just over a year. His expertise has benefitted the SLRFU, to the point where both male and female teams are a force to contend with overseas. Whiptail Warriors will host the next tournament on August 30 at the Monchy Grounds.
Will Rogues 2 make it three in row? Time will tell!
