It’s time to tackle the vexing issue of youth unemployment in Saint Lucia which currently stands at close to 20 percent. This is the message stemming from Axcel Finance who has joined forces with the Human Resource Development Department of the Ministry of Education, Human Resource Development and Labour to launch a new youth initiative.
The initiative takes the form of a Career Preparation Workshop to be held at the National Cultural Centre on Wednesday July 10. The workshop, targeted at secondary and tertiary level students will be held under the theme ‘Determination, Initiative and Persistence… Foundation for Success.’
Gathering some of the top experts on human resource in Saint Lucia, the Career Preparation Workshop will include Thecla Deterville, a former HR manager and Director of Courts (Saint Lucia) and current manager of Celestial Self Development Centre, Beverly Dulcie SLASPA’s Human Resources Manager, Len E Diptee HR Treasure Bay and Nadia Asgill-Simei, HR Manager Harris Paints OECS.
The experts will be speaking on topics from understanding the job market, CV preparation and sharpening the job interview skills. In addition, career counselors will be present to meet with young persons one-on-one and provide guidance on career choices and paths.
Axcel Finance’s Business Development Manager, Dave Charles said: “We are very concerned about the high rate of youth unemployment in Saint Lucia and this is our way of trying to inspire and motivate Saint Lucian youth to make good career choices and pursue their chosen careers.”
