It’s top secret: Sprint star Bolt on breakfast dumplings, Jay Z and why he’s a secret Irishman
Sportsmail caught up with the world’s fastest man, Usain Bolt, ahead of Sunday night’s eagerly-awaited 100 metres Olympic final.
Who is your sporting hero?
Don Quarrie is somebody I have always admired. He done a lot for Jamaican athletics and also for athletics as a whole. Hopefully what I am doing now is a continuation of what he started.
What would you be if you weren’t a sportsman?
I have to be a sportsman, that’s all I know how to do. If I wasn’t a runner I would either be a test match cricketer or would be playing for Manchester United or Real Madrid. I could have excelled in both cricket and football no problem.
Which other sportsman would you like to be?
It would be cool to have the career that Ruud Van Nistelrooy did. He played for my two favourite clubs Manchester United and Real Madrid, plus he scored lots of goals wherever he was at.
Career highlight?
I have to go with Beijing. I can’t say that any one Gold was more important than another, but Beijing was a great time in my life. I am looking to repeat what happened there in London.
… and the worst moment?
Whenever I don’t win. That’s the mentality you need to have as an athlete if you are going to be the best. You need to hate to lose.
If your house was burning down, what one possession would you save?
If I was in any building that was burning down, I would be out that place so fast I would probably break my world record!
What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?
It’s so simple, but my coaches always told me to ‘put my heart in it.’ You need to put your heart into every goal you have in life.
Three most-listened-to songs on your iPod?
I would guess Lollipop by Lil Wayne, 99 problems by Jay Z who is my favourite artist right now, and Red Bull and Guinness by Delly Ranx and Chino.
Favourite karaoke song?
I couldn’t do a Jay Z tune justice, so I would stick to my roots and get the place going with some reggae. That way the whole bar could see my moves as well.
Last film you saw?
I had some buddies around last week, and we were watching Anchorman.
Last book you read?
I was giving a book by a friend about the history of Manchester United. I haven’t finished it yet, but it’s interesting.
Favourite pre-competing meal?
If it’s breakfast it will be dumplings with meat, and if it’s lunch either Tuna or Snapper fish with pasta.
Can you cook? Best dish?I
The only meal I have to cook myself is breakfast. I can do some nice scrambled eggs or an omelette, but if it’s anything other than breakfast you are after, my house is not the place to come.
Your favourite holiday destination?
St Lucia is my favourite place to relax. The beaches are beautiful, the water is so clear, and the food is great.
In a film of your life, who would you like to play you?
Jamie Foxx is a great actor who always makes great movies, so that would be my choice. You know he isn’t going to be anywhere as fast as me, so I would probably have to be my own stunt double.
What’s the most expensive thing you’ve ever bought?
I love cars, so it will probably be one of them. I drove this amazing Ferrari once in Monaco, but it wasn’t mine somebody leant it to me for the day. I drove around Monaco thinking, this is somebody else’s Ferrari I better be careful with it.
Tell us a secret…
I am a secret Irishman. Jamaica might be all about the rum, but when I am not training and can have a drink, I love a nice cold pint of Guinness.
