On Friday 24th June The bookYard at Star Publishing was the venue for another book launch: Against The Odds – Inspiration for Parenting Children with Special Needs by Delia D. Samuel, Ph.D. Dr. Samuel is Lucian-born, a mathematics professor and a single mother of her two beautiful sons who both have special needs, having been diagnosed with autism. Mae Wayne introduced the author and quoted extracts from the book, informing the audience that she had been deeply touched by all she had read.
Dr. Samuel spoke of the roller-coaster of emotions that she had experienced on learning of the diagnosis for her boys. Initially there was bewilderment, then denial, frustration, guilt, anger and, finally, acceptance. She talked about the possible causes of autism and how she cares for her sons in the States.
Clarette Auguste-Taylor then gave an insight into how she has fought to gain help and acceptance for the special needs of her son here in Saint Lucia.
It was clear that both women have faced challenges and become stronger persons as a result. What touched everybody was the unconditional love demonstrated by this valiant pair for their offspring.
Against The Odds – Inspiration for Parenting Children with Special Needs by Delia D. Samuel, Ph.D is available from The bookYard, Star Publishing, Massade, Gros Islet.
