The Saint Lucia National Party (SNP) has ditched plans to contest the upcoming general election. The party made the announcement today, April 16, 2021. Founded in 2020 by former educator Mr. Kevin Lord, the SNP had hoped to offer Saint Lucians a new choice at the polls. Since its formation, the party had only named one candidate, Mr. Brennan Francis — who was endorsed to contest Castries Central. However, the SNP says it will no longer field any candidate.
In a statement sent to the STAR, the party announced: “The SNP is grateful for the outpouring of support it has received and continues to receive ever since its formation. The party is especially thankful to all those citizens who shared their ideas and want to be part of the vision the party embraces for our country.”
It continued: “Developing such a vision that will adequately address the needs of our people requires extensive consultation, and consequently, the SNP will not be part of the upcoming general elections. Meanwhile, discussion will continue on what is best for the future of the country.”
Lord told the STAR that while many citizens welcomed the idea of a third party, they also felt that the party was formed too close to an election. He says that the party is now focused on building its base, and outlining its positions and plans.
