At the end of January with the launch of their Risk Management Certification Program in Antigua, the Caribbean Governance Training Institute (CGTI) embarked on a packed calendar of events for 2020 that included conferences in St. Kitts, Turks and Caicos, Barbados, BVI, Trinidad and of course, Saint Lucia. Recognised as the gold standard for governance training in the region, CGTI has trained and certified a growing cadre of high profile graduates over the past seven years, from commercial, financial and public service organizations including the Governments of Saint Lucia and Antigua.

CGTI’s Lisa Charles and Dr Chris Bart

The most recent addition to CGTI’s curriculum was a direct response to a request for such a program, and the resulting two-day event saw fifty delegates participate from a variety of organisations based in Antigua and throughout the Caribbean region. Weeks later, the unprecedented paradigm shift created by Covid-19 coronavirus put a halt to the island-hopping itinerary of CGTI’s CEO Lisa Charles and Executive Chairman, Dr. Chris Bart, as well as the governance training plans of dozens of regional organisations.

Fortunately for this niche-dominating company, plans were already in the pipeline to take the Caribbean Governance Training Institute online, in order to make this crucial learning accessible to a wider set of professionals.

CGTI is used to being ahead of the game, being the first executive development specialist of its kind in the Caribbean, as Dr Bart explains. “In response to the COVID-19 situation, CGTI now offers its unique, internationally acclaimed Chartered Director Program on-line. It’s the same program, except now it’s ‘virtual’, with live, interactive presentations from global governance gurus. And it’s still the same dynamic educational content, focusing on the latest best practices that Caribbean Board Members need to know if they are to competently carry out their roles.”

Instead of a three-day in-person conference, The Chartered Director Online Program is six half days in duration, offering morning sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays, or evening sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays. According to Lisa Charles, this allows participants to assimilate important governance training into their hectic schedules, allowing them to have the same interactive experience from the safety of their homes or offices.

The launch of the first online C.Dir. course takes place on Monday, June 15th 2020, and will finish on
Monday 6th July with the final exam. All sessions are led by CGTI’s Executive Chairman & Principal Dr. Chris Bart FCPA, F. CIoD, C.Dir., and topics will include Principles of Good Governance; Roles, Responsibilities, Accountabilities and Culture; The Essentials of Financial Oversight; Strategic Thinking vs Strategic Planning; Risk Oversight; and Succession Planning. In just three weeks, delegates will be able to become certified with the internationally recognized designation ‘Chartered Director’ (C.Dir.)

But first, CGTI is offering a series of webinars starting on June 1st, addressing the issues of ensuring good governance in these times of unparalleled global change. Led by Dr. Bart and entitled ‘Moving Forward as an Organization / Board Through Economic Change and Crisis from Covid-19’, these hour long sessions will cover normal governance topics like ‘Audit and Risk Committees’ and ‘Executive Compensation’ in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic.

With the world gradually starting to open up and all types of business under monumental pressure to
survive and succeed, this webinar series promises to be fascinating as well as informative, allowing
delegates to stay ahead of the curve as the ‘new normal’ evolves.
