The St Lucia Volleyball Association kicked off its annual national league last Friday at the Beausejour Indoor Facility, with open matches between 2012 Women’s Division Champions Le Club Volleyball and runners up Jetsetters Volleyball.
Le Club graced the court with a national team line up with the likes of Dania Hamilton (five time Female Volleyball Player of the Year), Samantha Mann (2012 ECVA Best Blocker) and Natalie Edward (Senior Team Captain).
Jetsetters added a few new pieces to their line up, bringing in Kashima Noel (Best Libero, 2014 NORCECA World Championship Qualification – Round One) and Junior National Player Dala Noel.
The match was off to a slow start as the teams got familiar with each other, but quickly heated up in the second set, as both teams displayed acts of tremendous defense with Lisa Casimie (Jetsetters) and Samantha Mann (Le Club) putting up solid blocks. There was no shortage of offence either, as Dania Hamilton (Le Club) drilled in search of oil and Dala Noel (Jetsetters) in rare form, ripped the backcourt attacks.
The action had the crowd roaring as both teams displayed awesome athleticism. Le Club secured their victory in straight sets 25-15, 25-18 and 25-19.
In the Men’s Division, 2012 Champions Jetsetters also took on the runner’s up in the competition Le Club Volleyball. Jetsetters immediately displayed why they are four time League Champions, putting on an incredible blocking performance in the first set led by Dayne Williams (Best Blocker, 2014 NORCECA World Championship Qualification-Round Two).
Jetsetters held Le Club to 12 points as they took the first set with ease. Le Club had as much difficulty in the second losing 25-16, but caught an impressive rhythm in the third giving the champions some difficulty. Senior Nationals Gillan Octave and Junior Nationals Darnell Eudoxie, displayed impressive efforts of defence and offense, but Jetsetters overcame that fight winning the set 25-21 to capture their first win in straight sets.
