[dropcap]O[/dropcap]n Monday, 23rd, April, 2018 one day after International Earth Day, staff members of Coconut Bay Beach Resort & Spa came together to conduct a massive clean-up exercise along a stretch of the Beanfield highway adjacent to the hotel to the recreational park in Vieux Fort.
The clean-up was undertaken in commemoration of International Earth Day which was held under the theme: “End Plastic Pollution”. The activity began at 7:30 am with a contingent of seventy one (71) staff members adorned in green T Shirts with the slogan: “Respect our Island – Please Don’t Litter”. The group set about to rid the highway of unsightly garbage strewn by vehicle drivers, commuters and road users. Targeted areas also included part of Sandy Beach and the Dames Playing field.
The enthusiastic staff members armed with gloves and garbage bags took up the task of cleaning the one mile stretch of highway including surrounding areas within two (2) hours. Based on the garbage collected it was evident that approximately ninety (90) percent of the material was plastic mainly bottles, which meant that the exercise was effective as relates to the Earth Day theme of plastic pollution.
We at Coconut Bay call on members of the public to be more responsible in their disposal of garbage especially plastics. It must be noted that plastics are very harmful to the environment. Most plastics take hundreds of years before they decompose. As such they linger and contribute to a range of very negative impacts on the environment.
Let us all take personal responsibility as caretakers of the environment. Let us commit to be stewards for the benefit of current and future generations by taking care of our small beautiful island. Lets end plastic pollution.
