Game two of both the third place and championship games tipped off this past Saturday in the Rooster Select National Men’s Basketball finals at the Beausejour Indoor Facility.
In must win games for both, Gardens battling for third place and Courts Jets in the championship game, there was a feeling of desperation from both teams seeking to square the three game series after going down in the first game one week ago.
In the first game of the night, Gardens competed throughout but still came up short to a dominant and determined VBCC team 57-46. They were led by the monster man in the middle Marcian Calderon. He had 19 points and 14 rebounds as VBCC won the best of three series 2-0 and claim the third place in this year’s tournament.
For Gardens, Mervin Augustin top scored with 11 points and seven rebounds but it was not enough to lead his team to victory.
Game two of the championship game followed, with Canaries coming off an impressive win in game one, seeking to sweep two time defending champions Courts Jets and win their first ever National title.
Early on that looked the case, but a more organized and focused Courts Jets stepped up their defensive intensity in the second quarter and put the victory beyond doubt squaring the best of three series 1-1 with a 57-39 double digit win.
For the soaring Jets, Ron Dumurville led the way with 16 points and five rebounds.
Durocher Antoine had a sub-par outing, but still top scored for Canaries with 10 points and four rebounds.
The three game series is now tied 1-1 and will be decided with its final game today (Saturday) at 8:00 pm at the Beausejour Indoor Facility.
Prior to the final taking place at 8:00 pm, there will be an exhibition game at 6:00 pm featuring a few of the sponsors of the tournament going up against a team of veteran players. It is expected to be a pre-Father’s Day treat for the loyal fans who have supported the tournament.
The proceedings on Saturday conclude with a short trophy presentation and individual awards ceremony for this year’s tournament.
The public is invited to come out and support the players for their last major showing for this year. The entry fee is only $5.
