Digicel and Piton Management Agency Collaborate to Preserve Gros Piton

In keeping with Digicel’s environmentally sustainable consciousness, Digicel has collaborated with the Piton Management Area Office in embarking on an eradication project of alien plant species at the Gros Piton Nature Trail. The Piton Management Area (PMA) which acquired UNESCO World Heritage status in 2004 is now being threatened by new and destructive plant species on Gros Piton.

Team Digicel formed part of the troop of volunteers who undertook the two day uprooting drive of invasive plants from designated areas under the supervision of the Department of Forestry on the Gros Piton trail. The activity, though fun, was very informative and empowering for participants. Digicel further ensured that volunteers were well equipped with Digicel Go Green backpacks to make carrying of supplies easier and lighter.

The Ministry of Sustainable Development, Energy, Science and Technology is pioneering this work based on a decision by the World Heritage Committee on the State of Conservation of PMA to address the challenges of foreign plant species which can cause major harm to the area.

Digicel’s Marketing Executive Louise Victor, commented saying, ‘Digicel believes in taking action to preserve our natural world but more so placing particular emphasis on preserving the capability of our environment so as to continue to sustain us. Such an initiative brings a different type of awareness about the proactive approach we should take to environmental issues rather than be reactive after which most of the damage has already been done.’

Digicel encourages everyone to play their part in activities which aim to preserve our environment and St Lucia’s Heritage.
