The NBA officially got underway last week and here in St Lucia basketball took centre stage Friday evening as the Commercial League Basketball competition got underway at the Beausejour Indoor Facility with a double header.
At 6:00 pm, the tournament opener featured a victory for the St Lucia Fire Service over the Media Association with a final score of 74-33.
For the St Lucia Fire Service Marcian Calderon and Jerry Charles were blazing hot, each scoring a game high 22 points (pts) to lead their team to its first victory of the tournament.
Elijah Williams led the scoring for Media Association with 20pts and 14 rebounds (rebs) while his supporting cast provided very little assistance with 13 points.
In game two, the Inland Revenue Department behind some loud cheers and support from their large fan base at the venue, rallied past ECFH 51- 47.
For Inland Revenue, Keegan Preville had a huge double-double of 27pts and 17rebs. He was ably supported by Benny Hippolyte with a double-double of his own 17pts and 10rebs.
The only resistance for ECFH came from Sharm Smith with 19 pts, seven rebs and four steals.
Games continued on Saturday with another double header, starting first with the Goddard Group Power Shakers vs Insurance All Stars.
The Goddard Group won easily 68-37 behind a strong performance from Ali Quinlan with 23pts and three steals. Teammate Dillan Biscette chipped in with 16pts and 14rebs.
Ian Lesmore had a huge night on the boards for Insurance All Stars with 16rebs to go with six pts, but it was not enough to get them past Powers Shakers.
Game two of the evening was a close encounter between Sandals Resorts International and Scotia Bank. The big
money boys edged out Sandals 51-48.
Leading the way for the winning side was Shamoir Jn Baptiste. He had a tournament high of 30pts to go along with six rebs. Jn Baptise scored just over 58% of his team’s total. Ron Edward also contributed with 17pts and seven rebs for Scotia Bank.
Kurt Weekes had 22pts and nine rebs for Sandals in a losing cause.
The following games are set to take place this Friday: Renwick & Company vs Inland Revenue Department at 6:00pm; St. Lucia Fire Service vs ECFH at 8:00pm.
Games Saturday: Royal St. Lucia Police Force vs Sandals Resorts International at 6:00 pm; Goddard Group vs Scotia Bank at 8:00 pm.
