Floating seaweed sparks oil spill rumour!

The sight of “brown stuff” in St Lucian waters was mistaken for an oil spill.

It must have been quite a sight for those in the Cap Estate area on Monday.  Imagine taking in the surreal panoramic scenery only to have your eyes diverted to a brown mass of who-knows-what!

Needless to say, we St Lucians prefer to be safe than sorry, that’s probably why we always assume the worst in most situations.

NEMO Director Dawn French spent a large part of Monday fielding calls from citizens reporting a possible oil spill in the St Lucia/Martinique channel. Per protocol, French alerted the Marine Police who set out to investigate the unknown.  The cops reported back to French that the brown stuff was actually a bulky, clump of floating seaweed.
Personally, I’m not a fan of seaweed but I did have a giggle at the state of affairs. After all, I had gotten a prank text in the middle of the day informing me of an oil spill.  Thinking of the catastrophic impact such a disaster could have, not only on the island but the region itself, I was pressing for more details when I got a reply “Lol. Just found out it was not oil spill.  Giant seaweed moving across our waters.”

Sheesh! Talk about a way to give a girl a massive coronary!
