Former Prime Minister Dr. Kenny Anthony and Tourism Minister Dominic Fedee took turns throwing jabs at each other during today’s House of Assembly sitting. The motion being debated sought approval for government to borrow US $7, 945,000, to finance the Millennium Highway and West Coast Road Reconstruction project. During his contribution to the debate, Fedee also spoke on the current drought situation facing the country. The minister indicated that had the former administration fixed existing problems with the John Compton Dam, Saint Lucians would have been better able to cope with the present situation. He questioned why the government should listen to the opposition.

“Mr. Speaker you know what they say about recycling? When you recycle plastic, you get plastic. When you recycle glass, you get glass. And when you recycle failures, you also get failures. And so Mr. Speaker, I will not listen to people; I mean if they were a group of men on this side that had no experience in government. Look, the member for Vieux Fort South was in government since 1978. He is tired, he is a spent force, he has no ideas, so how could you re-elect him?” said Fedee.

“The member for Castries East was the deputy prime minister since 1997, acted on many occasions. The member for Castries South was the attache to the prime minister… they all had their tries and they’ve all failed. So why should we listen to them?”

Responding to Fedee later in the debate, Dr. Anthony said: “Now Mr. Speaker, the cockalorum, the parliamentary representative from Anse La Raye/Canaries. Cockalorum, you don’t know what that is? You know what it is? You’re opening your eyes. He says that I’m in politics since 1978, I’m a spent force, tired failure! And if you do not know what cockalorum means, it simply means a self-important little man. A small man with a big opinion of himself and no one can deny that the honourable member has a big opinion.”

“That’s okay, that’s okay, I have a big belly,” said Anthony in response to cross-talk, “but woe be onto you, when you reach my age and you have a big belly, you’ll look very unusual. Woe be onto you!”
