Therold Prudent on Thursday threw his support behind Gros Islet MP, Lenard ‘Spider’ Montoute, ahead of the upcoming general election. Prudent —the former political leader of the Lucian Peoples Movement (LPM)— attempted to unseat Montoute during the general elections of 2011 and 2016 but recorded little success.

In January 2019 the LPM closed up shop and Prudent joined the Saint Lucia Labour Party. He had hoped to contest Gros Islet on a Labour Party ticket but the party’s executive eventually placed their faith in sportscaster Kenson Casimir.

“In the past, we’ve had our differences but our differences can mend and has mended, for the unity of Gros Islet, for the future of Gros Islet. I am Flambeau, I am happy to be back home,” Prudent declared on May 27, 2021.

He further explained: “I am proud to have finally made my journey back home to the political party which my mother, Frances Prudent, alongside Sir John Compton, Henry Giraudy, among other great patriots of our country, founded in 1964. I am also exceedingly happy to formally endorse and to offer full support to my cousin, the current representative for Gros Islet, Mr. Lenard ‘Spider’ Montoute.”

He continued: “Together we will continue to work in the best interest of the people of the constituency of Gros Islet, and to also keep that legacy of service and unity upon which the United Workers Party was founded, alive! We invite you to join us, as we get to work, to ensure that Gros Islet continues to receive the kind of serious representation that it deserves.”

In 2016 Montoute won the seat over Emma Hippolyte by 1782 votes.
