Come Friday morning, House of Assembly Speaker Peter Foster and his 25-year-old son Luke are set to make more family history. The last-mentioned will be called to the local Bar, at the same ceremony to mark the elevation of his father to Queen’s Counsel.
Mr. Foster, who was elected Speaker following the November 2011 general elections, was called to the Bar at Lincolns Inn, in London in 1983. On December 9, 2009 his son, following in his footsteps, was admitted into the Honorable Society of Lincoln’s Inn and called to the Bar on March 8, 2012 to practice as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales.
Two years earlier he had been awarded the Bachelor of Laws from the University of Brighton. In 2011 he was a recipient of the Postgraduate Diploma in Bar Professional Studies from the College of Law of England and Wales.
Last year he completed a period of internship at the United Nations International Tribunal in Rwanda.
Several of Luke Foster’s close relatives are prominent members of the Bar, starting with his grandfather Kenneth Foster QC, a former attorney general and Minister of Communications & Works. He has also served as the parliamentary representative for Anse-la-Raye—Canaries. Luke Foster’s uncles Marcus and Colin Foster are both top-tier practicing lawyers.
By reliable account Anthony Astaphan S.C. will introduce Mr Peter Foster at Friday’s precedential investiture. A Dominica native, Mr Astaphan too has earned himself quite a reputation locally. On several occasions he has appeared in high-profile cases, usually of a political nature, assisted by Mr Peter Foster or representatives of Foster & Associates.
