Government on Taiwan Funds

Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Kenny Anthony expressed thanks to the Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) for its contribution of EC $9,058,765.09(USD  3,369,825.56) to the Accountant General, for new and ongoing projects. Proceeds of the cheque will be deposited in the Consolidated Fund.
Speaking at the handing over ceremony held in Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at the Conference Room of the Ministry of Infrastructure, Dr Anthony outlined the projects for which the funds have been earmarked. The Prime Minister said,
“The first project, which is under the Ministry of Youth Development & Sports, originates from this financial year’s capital programme and involves the provision of lighting for four of our island’s recreation grounds at a total cost of approximately EC$ 2.21 million. The four playing fields to benefit the added ability of night use will include the Marchand Grounds in Castries, the Phillip Marcellin Grounds in Vieux Fort, the La Ressource Playing Field in Dennery and the Anse la Raye Playing Field.”
The Prime Minister further explained that a portion of the funds will be allocated for the procurement of equipment for the Forensic Laboratory and the Saint Jude’s Hospital.
“Moneys will also be allocated through this cheque for long awaited forensic equipment which will be procured for the Forensic Laboratory.
As you know, the ROCT Government had already agreed to provide support to re-establish the Surgical Wing at the fire ravaged facility. The Taiwanese are now graciously agreeing to provide a further EC $6.36 million for the procurement and installation of critical diagnostic and radiological equipment for the new facility. Just under EC $3.21 million of the amount will be provided under this tranche of funding to commence procurement.”
Two new initiatives of the Government of Saint Lucia will also spring to life as a result of support from the Government of China (Taiwan). The Multi-Channel Data Centre (MCDC), as explained by Dr. Anthony, will be established to manage Government’s growing digital commons, while the Energy Conservation project will include the installation of LED street lighting and solar PV on best suited Government buildings.
Some changes are expected at the Vigie Beach, which will provide an upgrade to beach access, ambiance and visitor amenities. An amount of EC$ 500,000 will be allocated for commencement of this project.
Prime Minister Anthony, who accepted the cheque on behalf of the Government of Saint Lucia articulated his commitment to strengthening ties with the Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and expressed gratitude to Ambassador James Chang and his Government.
