It was a finish for the story books. Three of the six teams from the Gros Islet District tied and there was a double playoff after two teams tied again. When the dust settled on this exhausting competition among amazingly bright primary school children, these were the results: 1st place – Bonne Terre Preparatory, a first time winner in this 13-year competition; 2nd place – Grande Riviere, and 3rd place – Montessori Centre.
The major sponsor was the Rotary Club of Gros Islet, and other much appreciated sponsors included Caribbean Cinemas, Digicel, Lime, Rainforest Skyrides, Segway Tours and Therold Prudent.
District Education Officer Evarist John addressed the excited crowd and applauded Grow Well’s outstanding contribution to education in Gros Islet. Media anchor Kenson Casimir, a long-time Grow Well supporter, was a popular quizmaster. Grow Well President Paul Lorde, in congratulating winners, reminded all attending of the upcoming Young Authors Competition and urged Gros Islet schoolchildren to participate by submitting short stories on the general theme of giving, sharing, helping others and volunteering.
The Young Authors Competition celebrates Her Excellency Dame Pearlette Louisy – Her Love of Country and Devotion to Education.
Lorde caused a stir of enthusiasm when he revealed that winning prizes will be more tablets including 9 Kindle Fire HDs and lots of exciting additional prizes. He further advised that the prize-giving ceremony is scheduled for March 25 at 5 pm at the Gros Islet Secondary school in the presence of Her Excellency, Dame Pearlette Louisy.
