The final two preliminary rounds of the 2012 Guinness Street Challenge Small Goals Football competition, took place at the weekend at the Canaries and Desruisseaux Multi-Purpose Courts.
Saturday evening in Canaries saw eight teams participating, including for the first time in the competition an all female team called Ras Ipic’s Angels. The team was managed by Brian “Ras Ipic” Mc Donald of RSL 97 Radio St Lucia.
At the end of it all, Baghdad emerged victorious over Gimmicks four goals to one to book their place in the grand finals.
In Desruisseaux Sunday evening before a very large crowd, another eight teams competed. Summertime emerging winners over Blanchard United one goal to nil in the finals to qualify for the grand finals.
The grand finals of the 2012 Guinness Street Challenge Small Goals football competition takes place at the Cacacbef in Vieux Fort on Sunday from 3pm.
The sixteen qualifiers for the grand finals are: Defending champions Fantastic and Lookout from the Soufriere preliminaries; Guyanese and Rising Stars who were last year’s losing finalist from the Micoud preliminaries; Platinum FC and Mines who finished joint third last year from the Vieux Fort preliminaries; Veterans and Back A Yard (Castries preliminaries); New Village Ballers and Baba Roots from (Mabouya Valley preliminaries); Seaview
and Court Lions (Gros Islet Preliminaries); Street Legends and Gaza (Dennery preliminaries) Baghdad (Canaries preliminaries) and last but not least Summertime (Desruisseaux preliminaries).
The winning team will receive $3,000 thousand dollars and a trip to Guyana to represent St Lucia at the Grand Caribbean Finals of the 2012 Guinness Street Challenge Small Goals football competition.
Managing director of Blackheart Productions who are organizing the event along with Windward and Leeward Brewery David “Shakes” Christopher speaking after the final preliminary in Desruisseaux last evening said “it was a very challenging preliminary round of play.”
