Japan rocked by quake

The world woke to the news this morning that an earthquake measuring 8.9 on the Richter Scale had rocked the country of Japan. This is reportedly the most powerful earthquake in Japan’s recorded history and has spawned tsunami waves. The world is still watching the shocking images from the quake. The latest news is that 200 to 300 bodies are on the shores of Sendai, Japan. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon has since made a statement saying the organization stands ready to help.

Meanwhile at home in St Lucia we are trying to find out about the status of St Lucians, especially students studying in Japan, We will keep our readers posted as we try to get more information.

Update *We have made contact with St Lucian students in Taiwan and they have informed us they are okay.The tsunami warning for the country has been lifted. We also spoke with the Ambassador for Taiwan Tom Chou who assured us that the students were okay and that the country had suffered no damage.

Update: *We have confirmed there are at least two St Lucian students currently based in Japan.  The authorities are trying to compile a list of all St Lucians in Japan as well as their status.
