On August 30 Saint Lucia will observe the feast of La Woz (the rose) one of two flower festivals celebrated here each year as part of the islands cultural heritage.
Leading up to that day however, over the past two weekends, activities have been held in communities around the island. These will continue with Live-On-Air presentations on Radio Saint Lucia on Saturday 17th and 24th August by select La Rose Groups from 10 a.m, followed by the Zonal Séances; a must-see for its moving music, witty lyrics and magnificent song and dance.
The Northern Zonal Séance will take place in Aux Leon on Saturday 17th August from 8 p.m. at the USA Disco and the Southern Zonal Séance on Saturday 24th August at Alison’s Place in Mon Repos. On Friday August 30th the Grande Fete La Rose will commence with a Church Service from 10 a.m. at the Church of Assumption in Vieux Fort, followed by a Street Parade and short group presentations.
According to a release from the CDF the main objective of this year’s La Rose festivities is the achievement of a conscious society that believes and is committed to identity, national unity, exercised and maintained by strengthening the concepts of knowledge, belief in common roots, preservation of cultural memory, continuity, survival, and social cohesion.
This year’s events will celebrate the rich heritage of Saint Lucian people and their contributions to the shaping of the Saint Lucian cultural identity. As such, the Cultural Development Foundation and the La Rose Flower Society invites all the residents of Saint Lucia to “Wear a Rose for La Woz/ La Rose” and to participate in these events and explore the beauty, history, legacy and heritage of the La Rose Flower Festival. The feast day of the La Rose Flower Festival is celebrated every year on August 30th.
