One local company here has formed an alliance with Blue Waters which should see a reduction in the improper disposal of plastics and other waste material.Operations Manager of Eco-Media Saint Lucia Limited, Diana St. Catherine, said the initiative was officially rolled out on Sunday April 24, 2016 with the first three collection units being placed in several locations at one of Saint Lucia’s leading retailing and shopping locations in the north: the JQ Rodney Bay Mall.
She went on to explain that the units have been designed to collect disposables in three separate compartments: plastics, aluminium, and other, through individual openings.
St. Catherine said that the company’s aim is to contribute in a meaningful way by creating public awareness through PSA, social media and talk programmes highlighting the importance of protecting our fragile environment, by reusing and recycling many disposables.
“The beauty of Saint Lucia is renowned. But unfortunately, the indiscriminate dumping of garbage can slowly erode that image if efforts are not made to address the issue head on,” she told the STAR.
The businesswoman said many persons have indicated the lack of strategically placed collection units as one of the major contributors to the problem, thus this initiative to place waste collection units around the island was born.
“Our units are made from 100 percent solid stainless steel, beautifully designed with the sorting of disposables in mind, while remaining aesthetically pleasing.”
The company also took time out to thank and commend Blue Waters Saint Lucia Ltd and its team for immediately embracing the idea, and pledging its full support to the project as the initiative is very much in line with the company’s ongoing corporate social responsibility agenda.
Mention was also made of Pizza! Pizza! which has teamed up with the company and has welcomed the placement of a unit on its premises also in Rodney Bay.
Eco-Media Saint Lucia Limited encourages other local businesses to adopt one or more units and brand them as their own as a way to contribute to the campaign and efforts to keep Saint Lucia ‘Simply Beautiful’.
